キリスト教の祝日である「エピファニー（Epiphanie：日本語では公現祭）」を祝って食べられるお菓子とされていますが、現在ではフランス現地でも1月6日に限らず1月中は美しいガレット・デ・ロワがブランジュリーやパティスリーの店頭を飾ります。
「ガレット・デ・ロワ」は、主にフランス北部で見られるもの。南部ではオレンジフラワーウォーターで風味付けしたブリオッシュを美しく焼き上げた「ガトー・デ・ロワ（Gateau des Rois）」で祝うのがエピファニーの習わしなのだそう。切り分けてもらった中に「フェーブ」と呼ばれる豆人形が入っていた人は王冠を被り、王様（または王妃様）として祝福を受け、その年一年を幸運に過ごせるといいます（近頃は安全のためアーモンドを代わりに忍ばせることが多いです）。
