7月14日──パリ祭に寄せて

今日は7月14日、「パリ祭（Fête nationale française）」──フランスの建国記念日です。

この日は、1789年にフランス革命のきっかけとなったバスティーユ牢獄の襲撃、そしてその1年後に開催された「全国連盟祭」を起源とする、フランスにとって特別な日です。
絶対王政の象徴だったバスティーユが民衆の手によって陥落したことは、ただの事件以上に、「自由」を求める意志の象徴として、今も語り継がれています。

革命の始まりは、5月に開かれた三部会と、6月の「球戯場の誓い」。
当時の第三身分（平民）が「憲法ができるまでは解散しない」と誓いを立てたその姿勢に、人々の共感と希望が集まりました。
武力衝突の恐れが高まる中、パリ市民は武器と火薬を求めてバスティーユを襲撃します。

そのわずか1ヶ月後には「人間と市民の権利の宣言」が採択され、近代民主主義への道が開かれました。

私自身、かつて10年以上にわたりフランス大使館公邸で行われたパリ祭のイベントに参加させていただいたご縁があります。
着飾った紳士淑女たちが集う華やかな祝賀の場で、フランスの歴史や精神に触れ、学ばせていただいたことは今も大切な記憶です。

そしていみじくも昨日、**大阪の空に35年ぶりに「ブルーインパルス」**が登場しました。
その美しく力強い飛行を見て、ふと、かつてのフランス革命の人々が空を見上げて感じたであろう「自由の風」に思いを重ねました。

国や時代は違っても、自由や平和を願う気持ちは、いつの世も人々の心に息づいているのだと、改めて感じた一日でした。

July 14th - A Message for the Fête nationale française

Today is July 14th, the "Fête nationale française" - the National Day of France.
This day is special for France, as it originated from the storming of the Bastille prison in 1789, which sparked the French Revolution, and the "Fête nationale française" held a year later.
The fall of the Bastille, a symbol of absolute monarchy, by the people is still talked about today as more than just an incident, but a symbol of the will to seek "freedom".
The beginning of the revolution was the Three Estates General held in May and the "Oath of the Ballroom" in June.
The attitude of the Third Estate (commoners) at the time, who swore "not to disband until a constitution is created," attracted the sympathy and hope of the people.
As the fear of armed conflict grew, the citizens of Paris stormed the Bastille in search of weapons and gunpowder.
Just one month later, the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen was adopted, paving the way for modern democracy.

I myself have had the privilege of participating in the Paris Festival events held at the French Embassy residence for over 10 years.
It remains a precious memory to this day to experience learning about French history and spirit at such a glamorous celebratory occasion, where well-dressed gentlemen and ladies gathered.
And just yesterday, the Blue Impulse appeared in the skies of Osaka for the first time in 35 years.
Watching their beautiful and powerful flight, I was reminded of the "winds of freedom" that people during the French Revolution must have felt as they looked up at the sky.
It was a day that reminded me that, no matter the country or era, the desire for freedom and peace lives on in people's hearts throughout history.

On this day to celebrate freedom.
